WESTWOOD – The Smith College basketball team, the four-time defending NEWMAC champions, was selected to win the league title once again, it was announced by the conference office on Wednesday.
Smith secured the conference regular season title and went on to win the NEWMAC Tournament title for the fifth-consecutive year. The Pioneers made its sixth appearance in the NCAA Division III Tournament advancing to the National Title game in 2024.
This season, Smith returns the 2024 NEWMAC Rookie of the Year Hannah Martin (North Andover, MA/North Andover) along with Jane Loo (Saratoga, CA/Saratoga) and Selam Maher (Hopkins, MN/St. Louis Park) to the starting lineup. Jazmyn Washington (Los Angeles, CA/Birmingham Community Charter), who appeared in 29 games a season ago, will provide experience in the frontcourt. Martin was named D3hoops.com Region II Rookie of the Year after starting 26 games while averaging 8.5 points and 4.1 rebounds per game.
Graduate transfer Ally Landau (Livingston, NJ) (Haverford) will join the backcourt and gives Smith an additional shooting threat from long range. Landau averaged 16.3 points, 5.4 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game during her senior year and was a three-time All-Centennial Conference selection and two-time D3hoops.com All-Region honoree.
Smith opens the 2024-25 campaign as hosts of the annual Tyler Tip-Off Tournament November 8 – 10. The Pioneers will take on Ramapo on Friday, November 8 at 7:00pm followed by a 4:00pm matchup with Arcadia on Sunday, November 10. The rest of 2024 features non-conference games with the NEWMAC slate beginning Saturday, January 18 at WPI. The NEWMAC women’s basketball championship will be held on Sunday, March 2.
