College basketball is fast approaching, and the season is set to tip off for Penn State in exactly three weeks. On Monday, the first AP Top 25 Poll came out, and unsurprisingly, only four Big Ten teams made the ranking.
The Kansas Jayhawks, who received 30 first-place votes going into the season, will be the No. 1 team. Alabama and two-time defending champion UConn round out the top three. Five of the top 10 teams reside in the Big 12 conference, and the SEC has five teams within the top 15.
Early on, the voters seem to feel like the Big 12 and SEC will dominate college basketball this year, with the ACC third and the Big Ten taking a back seat to the other Power Four conferences. The Big Ten will have four teams ranked in the AP Poll to begin the season, with Purdue, Indiana, UCLA, and Rutgers all getting a spot in the top 25.
However, the Big Ten does seem to dominate the receiving votes category, with seven teams getting at least one vote. This may indicate that the 2024-25 season will have depth throughout the conference rather than a few elite teams. Penn State was not one of the programs to receive a vote and likely would have to go on a long winning streak to be considered.
Here are all the Big Ten teams appearing on the first AP Top 25 Poll of the 2024-25 college basketball season, including the teams receiving votes.
