Rick Carlisle recently previewed this season as the sequel to The Scoring Gods vs. The Swallowed Whistle, 2024's post-All-Star break surprise release. Braxton Reynolds (Thunderous Intentions) wonders if the league’s emphasis on physical play could benefit Oklahoma City's defense: "If Carlisle does indeed have an accurate grip on the future of NBA officiating, then Oklahoma City’s defensive unit should be licking their chops…The Thunder forced the largest turnover percentage and finished fourth in defensive rating during their history-setting 2023-24 campaign. However, a consequence of their physicality was their ranking 22nd in opponent free throw attempt rate…"
While the Thunder could gain an edge defensively, they’ll have to navigate any officiating shifts on offense, too, where they generated a below-average amount of free throws last season. Then again, Josh Giddey possessions are no longer a thing.
