Twelve Former Players from ACC Schools Set for WNBA Playoffs


CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – With the WNBA Playoffs presented by Google! set to begin Sunday, September 22, 12 former standouts from current Atlantic Coast Conference schools will compete for the WNBA title.

The second-seeded Minnesota Lynx features three players from the ACC, tying for the most in this year’s Playoffs. The Lynx roster includes Louisville’s Myisha Hines-Allen, Stanford’s Alanna Smith and Notre Dame’s Kayla McBride. The three players are tied with the fifth-seeded Seattle Storm, which carries Stanford’s Nneka Ogwumike and Notre Dame’s Skylar Diggins-Smith and Jewell Loyd.

The Storm will square off against the Las Vegas Aces in the first round, which carries a pair of former ACC standouts in Duke’s Chelsea Gray and Notre Dame’s Jackie Young. The Aces, who earned the No. 4 seed, are in search of their third straight title.

The eighth-seeded Atlanta Dream, who clinched its spot in the playoffs on the final day of the regular season, carry two players from ACC schools with Stanford’s Haley Jones and Georgia Tech’s Lorela Cubaj. The series featuring the third-seeded Connecticut Sun and the sixth-seeded Indiana Fever will feature a player on each team, as Notre Dame sharpshooter Marina Mabrey will play for the Sun and Stanford’s Lexie Hull will compete for the Fever.

All four series get underway on Sunday beginning with the Dream taking on the top-seeded New York Liberty at 1 p.m. ET on ESPN. The WNBA finals are scheduled to begin on Sunday, October 20.
