WBB: Unrivaled, a 30-player 3-on-3 league, to launch in 2025

The talent of the best women’s basketball players is unrivaled. And they’ll get to prove it in Unrivaled, a new 30-player 3-on-3 women’s professional basketball league set to launch in January 2025.

Co-founded by the New York Liberty’s Breanna Stewart and the Minnesota Lynx’s Napheesa Collier, the league will consist of a 10-week season held in Miami, allowing top players to play domestically—and be well-compensated while doing so—during the WNBA offseason. The league, which will be player-owned with opportunities for equity, intends to offer the highest average salary for a women’s professional sports league.

The 30 participants, who will be announced this summer, will be divided into six 3-on-3 teams and play games on a compressed full court.

In a statement announcing Unrivaled, Stewart said:

For years, women have relied heavily on off-court sponsorships for a majority of their income. With Unrivaled, we’re revolutionizing the game by prioritizing investments in our stars and ensuring their on-court performance is reflected in their pay.

Collier added:

With the growing popularity of women’s basketball and the WNBA, this is an opportunity for us to extend our visibility into the traditional basketball season. Breanna and I set out to create a league that would change the way women’s sports are viewed and ultimately how sports leagues operate. We may have had the vision, but this isn’t just our league—it belongs to the players, and the Unrivaled model reflects that.

Co-founders of the league are former ESPN president John Skipper and former Turner president David Levy, both of whom will work on securing a media rights deal. Investors in the league include US women’s soccer legends Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe, former NBA stars Carmelo Anthony and Steve Nash, golfer Michelle Wie West and UConn head coach Geno Auriemma.
