Capel Named Finalist for Skip Prosser Man of the Year Award

BOSTON, MA – Pitt head coach Jeff Capel is among the 20 finalists for the 2023-24 Skip Prosser Man of the Year award as announced by CollegeInsider.com Tuesday afternoon.

The Skip Prosser Man of the Year award honors those who not only achieve success on the basketball court but who display moral integrity on and off it as well.

Capel led the Panthers to a 22-11 record overall, including a 12-8 mark and fourth place finish in the ACC. Pitt reached the ACC Tournament Semifinals for the second time in program history, while finishing the season on a strong note going 12-4 over the final two months of the season. Pitt became the first team in ACC history to start 1-5 or 0-6 through six games and finish regular-season ACC play with a winning record. The Panthers are one of 136 teams in ACC history to start 1-5 or 0-6 in a slate of 12 or more games.

The Panthers posted a 20+ win / 10+ conference win season for the second consecutive campaign and for the 16th time overall with Pitt’s 26 ACC wins over the past two seasons is fourth most in the conference.

Pitt also posted road wins over No. 7 Duke (Cameron Indoor Stadium) and No. 21 Virginia (John Paul Jones Arena) to become the first team in the past 12 seasons to secure wins at both venues. With the win at Virginia, Pitt snapped the Cavaliers 23-game home win streak and secured its second consecutive win on the road against a ranked opponent. Pitt last accomplished that feat during the 2010-11 season.

In six years with the Deacons, Prosser posted a 126-68 record. For his career, he was 291-146 in 14 seasons including six as the head coach at Xavier and one year at Loyola (Md.).

At Wake Forest, Prosser’s teams averaged 21 wins per season while playing in arguably the nation’s most difficult league, the Atlantic Coast Conference. Prosser won 100 games at an ACC school quicker than all but two coaches in the 55-year history of the conference. He coached NBA stars Chris Paul and Josh Howard, led the Demon Deacons to the first No. 1 national ranking in school history and earned ACC Coach of the Year honors in 2003.

Prosser passed away of an apparent heart attack on July 26, 2007 in his office at Wake Forest. He had just returned from his morning jog.

The recipient of the annual award is determined by a 10-member voting committee, which consists of current and former head coaches, as well as two…
