Klay Thompson on a backcourt pairing with Chris Paul

Klay Thompson‘s move to the Golden State Warriors bench is starting to look like a masterstroke by Steve Kerr. Thompson has thrived in two of the three games since moving into his new role. On Sunday, Thompson dropped 23 points against the Denver Nuggets, shooting 38.5% from 3-point range.

When speaking to the media after the game, Thompson revealed his thoughts on teaming with Chris Paul within the Warriors’ second unit. The veteran guard is expected to return from injury against the Toronto Raptors on Thursday. Paul’s addition to the rotation will give Kerr an elite second-unit backcourt of two former All-NBA talents.

“I expect Chris to be himself,” Thompson said. “That’s just one of the greatest playmakers. A pesky defender. Just to kind of right the ship when Steph needs a break. It’s very exciting. I’m excited to step on the floor with him and lead that second unit. I mean, you can’t really ask for a better backcourt to come off the bench with. It’s very exciting to be honest.”

Paul has missed Golden State’s last 21 games. He will undoubtedly need time to get his legs back under him and be back up to speed. However, once he’s in rhythm, his presence will be a genuine boost to a team that’s enjoying a much-needed resurgence.

Recently, Steph Curry noted how the Warriors are aiming to break into the top six of the Western Conference. They want to avoid the play-in tournament. Having Paul in the rotation will help them achieve that goal. If Paul and Thomspon can quickly strike up a partnership, the Warriors will be a tough team to stop, and that should have fans excited for what’s to come.
