Cats Dominate Cal for First Bay Area Sweep Since 2001

BERKELEY, Calif. – Esmery Martinez had 20 points and Jada Williams scored 18 to lead Arizona to an 87-68 win at California on Sunday. With the win, Arizona sweeps the Bay Area schools on the road for the first time since 2000-01. Arizona is on a four-game win streak in conference play for the first time since the 2020-21 season.

Martinez nearly had a triple-double with 20 points, nine rebounds and seven assists all while committing no turnovers. The seven assists tied her career high, and her 20 points marked the third time this season she’s scored 20.

Neither team was able to get much going offensively in the opening minutes, but Arizona went on an 8-0 run in the first quarter and took the lead going into the second 

The Wildcats opened the second quarter on an 11-2 run led by a pair of buckets from Courtney Blakely, and it was all Arizona from there. The Cats scored 32 in the second quarter for their highest-scoring quarter of the season. Arizona shot 73.7% from the field (14-of-19) in the second frame.

The Golden Bears opened the second half with six unanswered points, but Martinez stopped the run with a layup. The teams traded buckets for the remainder of the quarter, and the Wildcats maintained a 22-point lead going into the fourth quarter. 

Arizona dominated Cal in points off turnovers (31-10) and in the paint (42-22). The Cats shot 56.3% from the field, the squad’s third-best single-game…
