Cal Looks To Split Season Series

The California women’s basketball team (15-11, 5-9 Pac-12) will look to avenge its loss from earlier this season to Arizona State (11-15, 3-11) when it hosts the Sun Devils on Friday at 7 p.m. PT at Haas Pavilion. The Bears will look to avoid a season sweep by Arizona State, which has not happened since the 2017-18 season.

This game marks the 84th all-time meeting between the programs with Arizona State holding a slight 42-41 series lead and having won the last matchup. The last win against the Sun Devils came last February in a 72-61 victory in Tempe, Arizona. The last win at Haas Pavilion came in a 74-61 victory on Jan. 2, 2023.

Arizona State is led by second-year head coach Natasha Adair. The Sun Devils return seven players from last year’s team and feature seven newcomers highlighted by Jalyn Brown, who enters this weekend second in the Pac-12 in scoring (20.4 ppg) in conference games.

In the most recent contest between the teams at Desert Financial Arena in Tempe in January, the Sun Devils jumped ahead by as many as 15 points in the first half but the Bears were able to fight back in the second half to get to within two points multiple times in the fourth quarter before falling 76-71.

In Cal’s last game at No. 3 Stanford, Michelle Onyiah paced the Bears with 12 points on 4-of-5 shooting and Kemery Martín went 3-for-4 from downtown, the most triples she has hit since Cal hosted Oregon on Jan. 21.

Friday’s game will air on Pac-12 Arizona with Tracy Warren and Angela Taylor on the call.
