Martinez’s Double-Double Leads Cats to 63-52 Win Over Arizona State

TUCSON – Esmery Martinez put up 18 points and 15 rebounds to lead Arizona to a 63-52 win over Arizona State on Sunday. The double-double was the fourth of Martinez’s season and the 37th of her career.

The win is Arizona’s (12-10, 4-6 Pac-12) fifth in a row over the the Sun Devils (10-12, 2-8 Pac-12).

Helena Pueyo stuffed the stat sheet with 11 points, six rebounds, four assists, three blocks and three steals. It was a balanced scoring effort with Breya Cunningham scoring 11, Courtney Blakely scoring 10 and Skylar Jones putting in nine. Cunningham grabbed six rebounds and swatted two blocks as well.

Pueyo tied for second in program history in career steals, making three on the day to bring her career total to 266. The fifth year also tied her career high in blocks, swatting three. She ranks 10th in Wildcat history in career blocks with 77. 

While the point differential was just one at the end of the first quarter, Arizona opened the second frame with a 7-0 run thanks to a pair of layups by Blakely and a three-pointer by Martinez. A 17-point second quarter by Arizona gave the Cats a seven-point lead going into the third.

Arizona was just 5-of-16 from the field in the third quarter but shot 57.1% in the fourth to pour in 18 points and seal the 11-point win over Arizona State.

The Cats outscored Arizona State 42-28 in the paint and limited the Sun Devils to just two fast break points. The teams…
