FREDERICK, Md. – A lockdown defense from the Hood College men’s basketball team prevented Middle Atlantic Conference Commonwealth opponent Alvernia University from getting anything going offensively, getting back in the win column with an 81-55 victory over the Golden Wolves.
Inside the Box Score
Garrett Cox (Glen Allen, VA/Glen Allen) scored 25 or more points for the second time in just three games, finishing with 25 points off of 71 percent shooting from the field.
Garrison Linton (New Market, Md./Oakdale) racked up a 14-point, 10-rebound double-double.
How it Happened
Hood started off on the back foot, trailing Alvernia 14-11 with 11:23 left in the first half, but managed to regain the lead after a three-pointer from Cox made it a 16-14 score line.
The Blazers would not relinquish the lead after that, as continuous shot-making and perfect rebounding on both sides of the ball led them on a 25-7 run over the next six minutes to take a 41-21 advantage. The Golden Wolves would make a couple buckets before the buzzer to cut Hood’s lead to 44-27 at halftime.
The second half started off the same way the first half ended, with Hood continuing to dominate the shooting lanes on both sides, making it a 25-point margin at 61-36 with 11:22 to play.
Alvernia looked like they might stage a bit of a comeback with a 9-0 run over the next 1:23, but a pair of free throws from Jack Fricka (Alexandria, Va./West Potomac) got the Blazers back on track as they would eventually get their largest lead of the game with a 27-point margin with just under two minutes to play.
Play continued to slow down as both teams traded baskets before the final horn sounded to confirm the 81-77 victory for Hood.

Kyle Gordon ended the evening with 10 rebounds and three blocks.
