McCain Named PNC Achievers Athlete of the Month

DURHAM – Duke freshman Jared McCain has been named the PNC Achievers Student-Athlete of the Month for the month of December.

A native of Sacramento, Calif., the guard has been at the forefront of a Duke program that has crafted a superb start to the season. McCain’s presence helped the Blue Devils to a 4-1 record in December, averaging 17.0 points, 3.2 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.0 steal per game in that stretch.

Duke saw its ranking improve from No. 22 to No. 14 in the month of December and McCain logged the first 20-point game of his career versus Charlotte on Dec. 9, with 21 points coming from 7-of-13 (.538) shooting from the field.

McCain scored a game-high 21 points versus No. 10 Baylor on Dec. 20, shooting an efficient 7-of-11 (.636) performance from the field, including 3-of-6 (.500) from beyond the arc. He added three assists and two rebounds to help Duke cap off the victory at Madison Square Garden. The 21 points matched his then-career-high for points and marked the second time in three games he led the team in scoring.

McCain went on to set a new career-high in Duke’s next game, scoring 24 points on 9-of-14 (.643) from the field at home versus Queens on Dec. 30.

The freshman’s shooting ability has been on full display this season, including a streak of seven consecutive games with at least two three-pointers (12/9/23-1/9/24). When McCain reaches that threshold, the Blue Devils are 11-0.

No. 7 Duke (13-3, 4-1) hosts Pittsburgh (10-7, 1-5) in Cameron Indoor Stadium on Saturday, Jan. 20 at 8 p.m., looking to extend its eight-game winning streak.
