UConn’s Tristen Newton was recognized among the best in college basketball this season when he was named to the Wooden Award Preseason Top 25 watch list, as was announced by The Los Angeles Athletic Club on Wednesday.
The watch list, made up of 25 student-athletes chosen by a poll of national college basketball experts, represents the front-runners for the most prestigious recognition in college basketball.
Newton, the fifth-year point guard from El Paso, Texas, leads the fourth-ranked Huskies in points (15.1), assists (5.8) and rebounds per game (6.5) entering Wednesday night’s matchup at Xavier. After recording two triple-doubles last season, Newton reached the feat for the third time in his career on Nov. 24 against Manhattan. He has three double-doubles this season.
Newton notched a season-high 31 points in a valiant effort that nearly lifted the Huskies to a win in Allen Fieldhouse, one of the toughest road environments in the sport, against Kansas. He has scored more than 20 points three times this season and has scored in double figures in all but two games.
In his second year with the Huskies after transferring from East Carolina, Newton is one of just three players from the Big East conference on the list, joined by Marquette’s Tyler Kolek and Creighton’s Baylor Scheierman.
