SEATTLE – Washington women’s basketball (11-0, 1-0) defeated Saint Mary’s (4-7, 0-0 WCC) 64-32 Saturday afternoon in Alaska Airlines Arena.
It’s the second-fewest points the Huskies have allowed an opponent so far this season, and the fewest points the Gaels have scored in program history. The 24.5% field goal percentage by the Gaels was the fifth time this season the Washington defense has held an opponent to under 30%.
Washington moved the ball well, recording 16 assists as a team.
Lauren Schwartz hit a jumper at the buzzer for the first points of the game, and the Huskies didn’t look back. Schwartz finished with nine points and a game-leading four assists.
Washington was up 26-8 in the first quarter, and had a double digit lead at the end of every frame.
Chloe Briggs had three made three-pointers in the first quarter, and finished 4-5 from three and with a career high 14 points.
Dalayah Daniels was the other Husky in double digits, also with 14 points along with five rebounds. The 14 points from Briggs and Daniels led all scorers.
The Huskies went into halftime with a 40-13 lead. It was the third time this season UW held an opponent to 13 points in a half.
Jayda Noble started the second half with a steal, finishing with three steals and five rebounds. Sayvia Sellers also had three steals, and the Huskies had nine steals as a team.
There was a wave of happy emotion…
