CHARLOTTE, N.C. (theACC.com) – Pitt senior forward Blake Hinson earned Atlantic Coast Conference men’s basketball Player of the Week honors, while his teammate, Carlton Carrington, was selected ACC Rookie of the Week for the third time in five weeks this season.
ACC men’s basketball weekly honors are determined by a vote of a 15-member media panel and announced on Mondays throughout the regular season.
Hinson put together a dominant week in wins over West Virginia and Canisius, averaging 27.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per game, while shooting 56.3 percent (18-of-32) from the field, including 63.2 percent (12-of-19) from three-point range and 100 percent (7-of-7) from the foul line. He set a school record with nine three-pointers in a 29-point, seven-rebound effort in an 80-63 road win over West Virginia. The native of Deltona, Florida, finished the week with 26 points and five rebounds in an 82-71 victory over Canisius. He went 8-of-13 from the field, 3-of-4 from three and 7-of-7 from the foul line.
Hinson has now scored 25 or more points in each of the past three games, becoming the first Pitt player to accomplish that feat since Curtis Aiken topped the 25-point mark in each of the first three games of the 1986-87 season.
Carrington averaged 16.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 7.0 assists per game in Pitt’s wins over West Virginia and Canisius. He opened the week with 16 points, four rebounds and nine assists, while going 6-of-13 from the field, including 3-of-8 from three-point range, in the Backyard Brawl. A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Carrington knocked down a pair of three-pointers and finished with 16 points, four rebounds, and five assists in a home win over Canisius. He has scored in double figures in nine of 10 games played and is one of just three players in the NCAA averaging at least 14.5 points, 5.0 rebounds and 6.0 assists per game.
