Basketball Moves Up to No. 9 in WBCA Poll


NORTHAMPTON – The Smith College basketball team moved up a spot to No. 9 in the latest NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Coaches Poll. 

Transylvania (5-0) remains the No. 1 ranked team followed by No. 2 NYU (7-0), No. 3 Christopher Newport (8-0), No. 4 Scranton (7-0) and No. 5 Rhode Island College (7-0). 

Smith (5-1) has won back-to-back games and is leading the conference in scoring at 83.7 points per game with a 27.5 points scoring margin. The Pioneers rank first in the NEWMAC in field goal percentage (51.7%), three-point shooting (41.3%), and assist to turnover ratio (1.52). Individually, Jessie Ruffner (Rocklin, Calif./Rocklin) (14.2 ppg, 8.7 rpg, 4.8 apg) leads Smith in scoring, rebounding and assists per game. The senior guard is just four points away from 1,000 in her career. Graduate student Sofia Rosa (Sudbury, MA/Lincoln-Sudbury) has been an inside presence for the Pioneers, averaging 13.5 points and 5.8 rebounds per game. Senior guard Amelia Clairmont (Laconia, N.H./New Hampton School) sits second all-time in three-pointers made (159), while senior guard Ally Yamada (Seal Beach, CA/Fairmont Prep Academy) is fourth all-time with 153 career three-pointers. Lauren Bondi ’19 holds the career record with 201. 

The Pioneers close out the semester with Williams at home on Wednesday, December 6 at 7:00pm followed by a trip to Brooklyn on Saturday, December 9 at 2:00pm.
