King, Pitzer Named PNC Achievers of the Week

PITTSBURGH – Women’s basketball’s Liatu King and Wrestling’s Dayton Pitzer were named the PNC Achievers of the Week.

Senior Liatu King had another monster week for the Panthers as she helped guide Pitt to a 2-0 week with wins over Saint Francis and Binghamton. King capped her week averaging 25.0 points, 8.0 rebounds, 3.5 steals and 2.5 assists while shooting 65.5% from the floor and 75% from the charity stripe across two wins. King started the week with 23 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals on 9-for-14 shooting in the dominant win over Saint Francis. In the win over Binghamton Sunday night, King scored a game-high 27 points to go along with 10 rebounds, four steals and two assists while going 10-for-15 from the floor in 34 minutes of work. The double-double marked her ACC and nation leading sixth of the season. The senior is on a tear for Pitt of late as she has scored 21+ points in five straight games, becoming the first Pitt player to do so since Shavonte Zellous in 2009. She is also one of just three players in the nation to have scored at least 21 points in five straight games this season (Caitlin Clark, Hannah Hidalgo).

Pitt redshirt freshman Dayton Pitzer keyed the No. 19 Panthers’ 22-9 win over Illinois on Sunday night at Fitzgerald Field House, winning the marquee matchup of the dual at heavyweight. With Pitt up 10-6 in the dual, and facing No. 8 Luke Luffman from the Fighting Illini, No. 11 Pitzer picked up his third consecutive top-20 win to help the Panthers pull away and take their home opener. Down 2-0 with a minute remaining in the bout, Pitzer piled up 10 points in quick succession with an escape, two takedowns and nearfall points to earn a 10-3 decision over the previously undefeated Luffman and send the fired up Fitzgerald Field House crowd into a frenzy. Pitt improved to 5-1 as a team and defeated a Big Ten opponent for the second time this season.
