WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Purdue Athletics once again shows success in the classroom, as 65 student-athletes from the winter sports season have been named to the Academic All-Big Ten Team in recognition of their outstanding achievements in the classroom.
The 65 winter accolades come after 89 Boilermakers were recognized in the fall. For the 2022-23 school year, Purdue student-athletes have earned 154 total Academic All-Big Ten accolades in the fall and winter seasons. The list will be completed when those competing in spring sports are honored at the end of the semester.
To be eligible for Academic All-Big Ten, student-athletes must be enrolled full-time at their university for a minimum of 12 months and carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.0 or higher.
Swimming & diving accounted for 74 % (48 of 65) of the Academic All-Big Ten recipients. The women at the pool had 25 honorees for the second year in a row and the men’s program produced 23, matching last year’s program record. Wrestling had 10 earn Academic All-Big Ten distinction, men’s basketball had five for a second consecutive year and women’s basketball had two.
Two Boilermakers, both swimmers, earned special recognition for maintaining perfect 4.0 cumulative GPAs, senior Kat Mueller, majoring in social studies education, and sophomore Luke Fortner, an aeronautical and astronomical engineering major.
Twenty honorees are recognized on the Academic All-Big Ten Team for the third time in their Purdue careers, including five that earned the distinction for the fourth time. Wrestlers Parker Filius and Thomas Penola, swimmers Maggie Merriman and Nick Sherman and basketball player Cassidy Hardin all were recognized in 2020, 2021 and 2022 before this year’s honor. In total, 43 of Purdue’s 65 honorees are recognized for at least the second time.
The Big Ten Conference recognized a total of 1,000 student-athletes as Academic All-Big Ten honorees for the winter sports season. That total includes 378 from swimming & diving, 196 from wrestling and 150 from basketball.
