Re-visiting ESPN’s prediction for the SEC season

Now that the regular season has come to a close, it is a perfect time to take a look back at the season that was for Auburn basketball.

Our first look-back features the ESPN Basketball Power Index, and how they forecasted Auburn’s SEC slate to conclude. Prior to the conference portion of the schedule, Auburn Wire examined how the BPI projected Auburn’s season to shake out. Did they get it right?

The men’s College Basketball Power Index (BPI) is a measure of team strength meant to be the best predictor of performance going forward. BPI represents how many points above or below average a team is.

Here’s a look at how the ESPN Basketball Power Index predicted each SEC game to shake out, as well as what really happened:

Prediction: 72.8% chance to win

What really happened: Auburn won, 61-58

Running record: 1-0

Johni Broome led the charge by scoring 14 points and pulling down 11 rebounds in Auburn’s SEC opener.

Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports

Prediction: 66.1% chance to win

What really happened: Auburn lost, 76-64

Running record: 1-1

This was the first game that the ESPN BPI incorrectly predicted on the season, and it happened a lot earlier than most anticipated. Auburn committed 20 fouls against Georgia in this game, sending them to the line to shoot 32 free throws.

Prediction: 55.5% chance to win

What really happened: Auburn won, 72-59

Running record: 2-1

This game had the makings of being a great one in the early portion of the SEC schedule, but the No. 13 Razorbacks could only shoot 34% from the field and had to rely heavily on freshman Anthony Black to keep them in the game.

Prediction: 58% chance to win

What really happened: Auburn won, 82-73

Running record: 3-1

Auburn trailed Ole Miss by one-point at halftime, but surged to outscore the Rebels, 48-38 in the second half to run away with the nine-point win. Wendell Green Jr. led the team in scoring with 24 points.

What really happened: Auburn won, 69-63

Running record: 4-1

Auburn won its’ third game in a row by defeating Mississippi State at Neville Arena. Jaylin Williams led in scoring with 21 points and seven rebounds.
