Wendell Green, Johni Broome named ‘Tigers of the Game’ in Ole Miss win

It was a close one, but Auburn Basketball did what was needed down the stretch to earn a 78-74 win over Ole Miss on Wednesday night.

Auburn and Ole Miss swapped leads five times and tied each other six times before the dust settled. In a game with marginal room for error, free throws came at a premium. In the game, Wendell Green Jr. connected on 11-of-12 shots, and Auburn as a whole made 22-of-24 shots from the stripe.

“It shows that we are learning,” Green said during the postgame press conference. “We ended up getting to the free throw line a lot. That is the main thing that Coach (Pearl) told us, ‘at the end of games, we need to stop fouling and get to the free throw line more.’ It is an automatic two points. We improved on that and I hope we can improve more down the road.”

Johni Broome also played a vital role in the win as well by leading the team in rebounds and blocks, and was second in scoring. The efforts of Broome and Green led them to earn Tigers of the Game honors following the win over Ole Miss.

In close games, made free-throws matter. In Wednesday’s win over Ole Miss, Auburn went 22-for-24 at the stripe, with Green converting 11 of his 12 attempts. Auburn’s free throw statline was a breath of fresh air from last Saturday’s game at Vanderbilt, when the Tigers only received 10 opportunities at the free throw line.
