Morning Hoops Heads! Here are the latest NBA news headlines.
NBA News: Atlanta Hawks fire Nate McMillan.
The Atlanta Hawks surprised no one when it was announced that they were parting ways with head coach Nate McMillan.
McMillan has had a difficult season as the coach of Atlanta, with his team currently under .500, and he has also clashed with team superstar Trae Young.
While underachieving is one thing, beefing with your best player is another. Young might not have directly asked the team to fire McMillan, but reports have stated that he could ask for a trade this offseason. Therefore, it seems to be no coincidence that McMillan is no longer the coach.
In fact, it could be seen as a means of appeasing Young, who had reportedly alienated teammates and members of the organization with his behavior following an altercation with McMillan. Whoever the Hawks choose to replace McMillan with long-term will surely need to have a better relationship with Young, or they run the risk of him requesting a trade.
NBA News: Miles Bridges return?
The Charlotte Hornets currently have the fourth-worst record in the NBA, in part thanks to injuries to All-Star LaMelo Ball and the absence of Miles Bridges. Bridges hasn’t played this season due to some pretty serious off-court issues, which is in the process of being resolved. That could pave the way for his return to the NBA, even though he is still a restricted free agent.
If this is indeed the case, then he could be back on the court in less than two weeks. However, the timing seems odd. The Hornets have nothing to play for, and having him back in the lineup could theoretically hurt their lottery odds.
As it stands, the Hornets would have about a 12% chance of landing the number one overall pick, and risking that to bring back a controversial player seems ill-advised.
That’s all for now, hoops heads!
