Making sense of Texas’ 74-67 loss to Texas Tech

Texas suffered a shocking upset loss to Texas Tech on Monday night. Frankly, it’s taken a day to process what happened and still is hard to understand.

It’s equally difficult to explain the Raiders’ 14-12 record on the year. On paper, a team with the likes of Devion Harmon and Kevin Obanor should be a force in any conference. Add in Pop Isaacs’ skill set and early contribution, and you have a team that never should have started 0-8 in conference.

It appears Texas Tech head coach Mark Adams has started to put things together with wins over Kansas State and Texas in around a 48 hour span.

Let’s look at what went wrong for the Longhorns and what went right for the Red Raiders on Monday night.

Texas Tech was uncharacteristically proficient from behind the arc on Monday. The team went through a string of three point baskets to build its lead. In addition, Mark Adams’ team banked in shots off the backboard that you could argue weren’t intended to be banked. The luck didn’t end there for the Raiders.

Sir’Jabari Rice was not his usual self in Lubbock. He simply had an off shooting night. Rice went 3-for-9 from the field while Timmy Allen went a cold 0-for-4 on field goals. The two combined for 10 points. Monday’s aberration was a textbook example of the adage, “sometimes it’s not your day.”

Texas was historically good from the free throw line against West Virginia. Unfortunately, in the game it could have used that performance, the Longhorns came up short. The team shot an underwhelming 58.8 percent from the line against Texas Tech. A couple more free throws could have made the game much more interesting down the stretch.
