Women’s basketball stumped by Mary Washington


FREDERICK, Md. – The Hood College women’s basketball team struggled in a home non-conference loss to Mary Washington 91-49. 

Inside the Box Score

  • Marlise Newson (Carlisle, Pa./Carlisle) and Lele Wright (Wilmington, Del./Howard) tied for the Blazer-high with 12 points. Newson added four rebounds and two assists.
  • Na’Vaye Quarles (Glen Burnie, Md./North County) ended the game with nine points and three rebounds. 
  • Kayla Watkins-Harvey (Largo, Md./Largo) grabbed seven rebounds and blocked two shots. 

How it Happened

  • Newson got the Blazers on the board, knocking down two free throws at the 7:56 mark in the first period to trail 4-2. The Eagles scored the following eight points to push their lead to 12-2 with 6:18 left. 
  • Mary Washington ended the first period on a 17-4 run, taking a 29-7 lead into the second. Jordan Carpenter led the Eagles, scoring 12 of her 20 points in the first.
  • The Blazers cut Mary Washington’s lead to 35-18 on a Newson 3-pointer from the corner with 3:11 left in the second. 
  • Mary Washington ended the final three minutes on a 14-2 run, giving the Eagles a 49-20 lead going into halftime. 
  • The Eagles opened the third period by scoring the first 10 points, extending their lead to 59-20 with 6:39 left. 
  • Mary Washington’s biggest lead was 81-33 at the 7:53 mark in the fourth period. 

Analysis

  • Mary Washington shot 45 percent from the field, compared to 32 percent from the Blazers.
  • The Eagles had 31 points off Hood turnovers, while the Blazers cashed in 13 points from Mary Washington’s mistakes. 
  • Mary Washington outrebounded the Hood 54-37. The Eagles pulled down 17 offensive rebounds as a team. 
  • UMW had 31 points from its bench, compared to the Blazers’ 14 points from the bench. 

For the Opponent

  • Carpenter led the Eagles with 20 points, adding two blocks and a steal. 
  • Keagan Schwab ended the evening with 17 points, to go with seven rebounds and two steals. 
  • Ashley Martin ended the game with seven rebounds and three steals.
