(RV) Loras Defeats Women’s Basketball Behind Dominant Fourth Quarter


CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Coe College women’s basketball team suffered a 69-46 defeat to (RV) Loras College on Wednesday evening at Kohawk Arena. Loras got off to a solid start, outscoring Coe 15-10 in the opening period after hitting six first-quarter field goals. The Kohawks battled back in the second, tying the score at 17 less than three minutes in. Loras and Coe then went back-and-forth for the final minutes of the third but the visitors edged the Kohawks 14-11 to lead 29-25 at the break. Coe had a strong start to the third quarter, ripping off a 9-4 run in the opening three minutes but again Loras had answer, closing the period with a 12-7 advantage. The Duhawks pulled away in the fourth quarter, getting a dominant 24-5 frame to secure the victory. Molly Buck and Caydee Kirkham led the Kohawk offensive effort, scoring 10 points each while Kirkham added five boards and three assists. Kelly Knight and Meagan Harvey also had solid contributions for the Kohawks, adding six points each on a pair of 3-point field goals. The loss snaps a two-game winning streak for Coe and moves it to 15-6 overall and 7-5 in the league while Loras improves 16-4 and 9-2 in the A-R-C.

  • Loras opened the game on top, scoring back-to-back buckets to go ahead 4-0 in the first minute-plus. The Kohawks settled in, getting a pair of free throws from Buck to get on the board with 6:32 left in the quarter. The squads then both came to life, trading blows for the final minutes. Loras slightly edged Coe, outscoring the hosts 11-10 before the end of the frame. The Duhawks, who forced Coe into seven first-period turnovers, held a 15-10 heading into the second. 
  • Coe had a better start to the second quarter, scoring the first four points as Buck and Kirkahm converted a pair of free throws. Loras answered with a jumper on the other end but the Kohawks tied the game on the following possession on a 3 from Harvey. Loras and Coe then battled over the final five minutes of the half, trading buckets before the end of the frame. The Duhawks again got the better of the Kohawks before the halftime whistle, outscoring the hosts 12-8 to grab a 29-25 halftime lead.
