Genesis Bryant continued her stellar play for the No. 22-ranked Illini women’s basketball team, averaging 18 points per game in back-to-back conference matchups against No. 6/6 Indiana and in-state rival Northwestern. Bryant, a transfer from NC State, has been key to the Illini’s 16-4 start to the 2022-23 season, having already earned two Big Ten Player of the Week selections and being honored as the ESPN National Player of the Week earlier this month following her performance in the Illini’s thrilling home win over No. 12/10 Iowa on New Year’s Day. A native of Jonesboro, Ga., Bryant is a junior studying communication at Illinois.
On the track, Jessica McDowell has opened the indoor season in impressive fashion for the Fighting Illini. At the Wisconsin Midwest Invite, McDowell placed second in the 60m with a personal-best time of 7.46 seconds. McDowell also posted a record-breaking performance in the 300m with a time of 37.13 seconds, winning the event and surpassing the school-record mark held by former NCAA Champion Ashley Spencer. McDowell, from Normal, Ill., is a senior at Illinois majoring in English.
