Auburn Basketball climbs to No. 15 in KenPom after LSU win

Auburn took care of LSU on Wednesday night, defeating the Bayou Bengals, 67-49 at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center in Baton Rouge.

The No. 16 Tigers shot 44% from the floor and were led offensively by Wendell Green Jr. and Jaylin Williams, who each scored 14 points.

Auburn is getting hot at the right time, as they have won four straight games including two road games against SEC foes. Auburn’s next opponent, South Carolina, is going through struggles currently which will give Auburn the opportunity to continue its recent run of success.

How did Auburn’s road win at LSU affect its place in the KenPom? Believe it or not, a road win over the SEC carries merit, no matter the location.

Auburn’s win at LSU did wonders for their overall ranking, as they move up four spots from No. 19 after last Saturday’s home win over Mississippi State.

Auburn played consistently on offense in Wednesday’s win, shooting 44%. According to KenPom data, Auburn is projected to score 110 points per 100 possessions.

Auburn held LSU to 49 points on Wednesday, which is the second-lowest scoring output for an Auburn opponent this season. Following the LSU win, Auburn is projected to allow 90.7 points per 100 opponent possessions, which is one of the better rates in the country.

When it comes to offense, Auburn likes to take its time. According to KenPom data, the Tigers are expected to create 68.1  possessions per a 40 minute contest.  For referrence, Texas- Rio Grande Valley creates the most offensive opportunities by recording 74.7 offensive possessions per game.

South Carolina will enter Saturday’s game at the bottom of the SEC standings after falling to Ole Miss on Tuesday. Their KenPom ranking is disappointing, as they check in at No. 240 according to the latest update.
