Boomer Esiason talks Rutgers basketball, Paul Mulcahy and dentist fans

Rutgers men’s basketball might need to get Boomer Esiason some courtside seats a few more times for the rest of the season. The former NFL quarterback and popular co-host of the ‘Boomer and Gio’ show on WFAN was on-hand Thursday night for Rutgers men’s basketball 64-50 win over Maryland.

Esiason is a Maryland alum and one of the most notable players to emerge from the football program’s history. He sat courtside alongside his former NFL teammate, Marco Battaglia. A former standout tight end at Rutgers, Battaglia played — years in the NFL and is now senior advisor to the president of the Rutgers foundation.

On Friday morning’s show, Esiason talked about his experience at Jersey Mike’s Arena, still affectionately referred to as the RAC (Rutgers Athletic Center). He talked about the game, praising Rutgers guard Paul Mulcahy.

He also poked some fun at a verbose Rutgers fan seated next to him who he only referred to as “the dentist.”

“That Mulcahy kid in the second half took over,” Esiason said on WFAN.

“He’s a really good player. He just handles the ball was so solid. What’s he about 6-foot-6? (Recco answers (6-foot-7). 6-foot-7…He just took over.”

Mulcahy led all Rutgers scorers with 15 points.

WFAN is the flagship station for Rutgers football and men’s basketball. Jerry Recco, who handles the play-by-play duties, is a WFAN personality.

Recco, who provides the updates on the show, engaged in some banter with Esiason throughout the segment.

“So here’s the thing about the RAC – I had never been there before. So I didn’t know what to expect. And Marco was telling me that I guess Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo. Yeah, that Tom Izzo not our Tom Izzo – hates playing in that place. And I guess he has said so,” Esiason said.

“But what I’m saying is I guess Tim Izzo has complained about the RAC. Okay – for whatever reason, and I can understand why. I mean, there was a point in the first half where (Rutgers) – the shot clock ran out twice, right? And, well,  not for our offense but for your offense.

“And the ball goes out of bounds underneath our basket. And I’m like, we got the ball. And, they put two seconds on the clock and I’m like ‘What the hell is that?’ And the dentist was screaming at the officials and they cowered to his attacks.”

Rutgers men’s basketball is now 11-4 (3-1 Big Ten) following the win over Maryland. They are 1-0 with Esiason at Jersey Mike’s Arena.
