PHILADELPHIA — Before Willie Green became the head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans in 2021, he spent 12 seasons playing in the NBA. The first seven of those came as a member of the Philadelphia 76ers. He played 422 games with the franchise, starting 211.
Green played alongside Allen Iverson, Andre Iguodala, Thaddeus Young, Lou Williams and others while helping the Sixers make the playoffs in 2005, 2008 and 2009. He averaged 9.4 points and 1.9 rebounds with the Sixers.
As he made his return to the Wells Fargo Center on Monday, Green recalled his time and some memories with the franchise.
“I had a few of them, man,” said Green. “A few playoff runs, just having an opportunity to watch Allen play every night and play alongside him was special, but my experience in general here was a special one. My first seven seasons in the NBA so definitely always brings back good memories.”
Green continued to give a lot of love to the Philadelphia fan base. This is one of the more passionate fan bases in all of sports, and they let it be known what they expect out of their teams.
“It brings back so many memories, coming to this city,” he said. “This is where I was fortunate, blessed to get my start and what a start. Brotherly love. Big-time sports town. They boo you if you stink. They cheer for you if you do well, but really educated fan base here.”
