Bryce McGowens is “going to be a star” in the NBA, says teammate

Former Nebraska Cornhuskers guard Bryce McGowens has played well in limited action for the Charlotte Hornets this season. In 13 games, he is averaging 4.1 points, 1.4 rebounds, 1.0 assists, while shooting 37.3% from three-point range. The second-round rookie is making a case to crack the rotation, but one of his teammates sees a higher ceiling in him.

Hornets forward Kelly Oubre raved about McGowens in a recent postgame press conference. Oubre said that he believes McGowens is going to be a “star” in the NBA. Here is his full statement via Schuyler Callihan of Sports Illustrated:

“His poise, his demeanor. He doesn’t get rattled. No moment seems too big for him. He’s always ready. He comes out there and he plays his game, he’s smooth. When I was his age, I was 100 miles per hour running through walls and just banging my head against everything, so to see him in his mind frame right now as a rookie, it doesn’t emulate a normal rookie. He’s NBA ready and I feel like he’s going to be a star in this league. Whatever I can do to help him, it’s what I’m here for. Just pointers, getting up shots, or just talking about defensive film things like that. He has a lot of talent, a lot of potential to be a star in this league.”

As the season progresses, McGowens should see more opportunities. The Hornets currently sit at 10-26, and they have the second-worst record in the Eastern Conference. If they continue at that pace, they should be eliminated from playoff contention early. Subsequently, the organization should expand the roles of the younger players on the roster, including the 20-year-old McGowens.

Below are McGowens’ best plays of the season, thus far.
