GREENSBORO, N.C. (theACC.com) – North Carolina junior guard Deja Kelly has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, and Florida State guard Ta’Niya Latson earned Freshman of the Week honors. Kelly was named for the first time this season, while Latson was honored for the third time.

ACC women’s basketball weekly awards are voted on by the league’s Blue Ribbon Panel.

 

Kelly led the ACC last week with 23.0 points per game in North Carolina’s back-to-back ranked wins over No. 18 Oregon and No. 5 Iowa State to secure the Phil Knight Invitational championship. In Thursday’s win over the Ducks, the San Antonio, Texas, native scored 17 points and handed out seven assists in a come-from-behind 85-79 victory. In Sunday’s title game against the Cyclones, the guard dropped in a game-high 29 points with eight rebounds in a 73-64 victory. For her efforts, Kelly was named Tournament MVP.

 

Latson posted three 20-point games and shot 48.9 percent (23-for-47) from the field in Florida State’s trip to the Cancun Challenge. After the Miami, Florida, native scored a game-high 20 points with eight rebounds in a narrow setback to Oklahoma State on Thursday, Latson dropped in another game high with 21 points to lead the Seminoles to a 76-75 win over previously unbeaten Purdue on Friday. The guard rounded out her week with 20 points, four rebounds and four assists to pace FSU in an 88-57 win over Harvard last Saturday. For her efforts, the freshman was named Tournament MVP.

 

ACC women’s basketball action resumes this week with the 2022 ACC/Big Ten Challenge scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday. This year’s Challenge features four matchups featuring ranked opponents, beginning with No. 4 Ohio State visiting No. 18 Louisville on Wednesday (7:30 p.m. – ACC Network). On Thursday, No. 6 North Carolina heads to No. 5 Indiana (6 p.m. – BTN), No. 20 Maryland travels to No. 7 Notre Dame (6:30 p.m. – ESPN2) and No. 12 NC State meets No. 10 Iowa (8:30 p.m. – ESPN2).
