Musselman and the Hogs taking surfing lessons in Maui

Musselman and the Hogs taking surfing lessons in Maui

The Arkansas Razorbacks are about to take another “business trip,” this time to the beautiful land of Hawaii for the Maui Invitational.

The Hogs on the court have handled their early non-conference foes, averaging a margin of victory of 20 points without star freshman Nick Smith Jr. who is still nursing a knee injury.

In the Maui Invitational, they’ll see more formidable non-conference opponents, starting with Louisville on Monday. Before that, coach Eric Musselman wants his team to enjoy the Hawaiian sun, which includes surfing lessons.

“We are leaving earlier than originally planned so we can put our bags up and get out on the beach,” Musselman said about the team’s unique plans.

On Saturday, we’re doing surfing lessons. My hope and goal [is] to get everybody up on the board. We did it at Nevada. We had all 13 players be able to stand on a surfboard in the water and try to ride a wave. That was in Costa Rica.”

Freshman guard Anthony Black was asked as he left the press conference Wednesday by Hogs media legend Bob Holt whether he would participate. Black grinned and said no one could get him up on one of those things. The room responsed in laughter.

Musselman is not worried about his team focus, and he shouldn’t be. He has done a great job using life outside of basketball as a team bonding tool during these vacations – er – basketball business trips.
