WBB Set For Wednesday Morning Tipoff

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The North Carolina women’s basketball team will take a familiar court at an unfamiliar time Wednesday, hosting South Carolina State at Carmichael Arena for an 11 a.m. tip-off. The game will air on ACC Network Extra.

No. 13 UNC comes into the game at 2-0 while the SCSU Bulldogs are 0-3.

Tickets are available here or at the door. Suggested parking for fans is the Rams Head Deck.

The game is the last at home for the Tar Heels until Dec. 7. Between Wednesday’s game and then, the team will hit the road for four games in a row, traveling to Virginia (James Madison), Oregon (Oregon and either Michigan State or Iowa State at the Phil Knight Invitational) and Indiana (for the ACC-Big Ten Challenge).

Wednesday’s game is the team’s Field Trip Game, with school kids from all over the area joining the Tar Heels for a morning of basketball. Odds are they’ll find plenty to cheer about, as Carolina has averaged 83 points per game over its first two outings.

UNC has rolled to a 29.5-point average margin of victory over Jackson State and TCU, shooting 51.6 percent from the field. That stellar shooting hasn’t translated to the foul line, however, so the Tar Heels will be looking to improve on their 54.4 percent free throw shooting.

UNC vs. South Carolina State

The Tar Heels and Bulldogs last met in 2020-21, in Carolina’s fourth game of a season that saw massive impact from Covid. On Dec. 3, 2020, in a nearly-empty Carmichael Arena, UNC beat S.C. State 98-28, with all five Tar Heel starters in double figures. Deja Kelly, then a freshman, led the way with 16 points in just 14 minutes on the court. She was 6-7 from the field and 3-4 from three-point range. Kennedy Todd-Williams was also part of the starting lineup and finished with 14 points and 10 rebounds for her first career double-double.

• Prior to the 2020 meeting, the teams hadn’t met since the 2016-17 season.

Scouting the Bulldogs

South Carolina comes to Chapel Hill 0-3 following season-opening losses at East Carolina, Queens University and the University of St. Thomas. After Wednesday’s game, the Bulldogs will play at Campbell on Saturday before their home opener on Nov. 22.

Nicole Gwynn leads SCSU in scoring with 8.0 points per game. Lovely Sonnier is the team’s top rebounder with 8.7 per game.
