BALTIMORE, MD – The Pitt women’s basketball team (1-0, 0-0 ACC) opened up the 2022-23 campaign with a road victory over the Coppin State Eagles Monday night by the score of 56-41. Graduate transfer Channise Lewis led the Panthers with 11 points and four rebounds in the win.
After the Eagles opened the scoring with three straight, Maliyah Johnson opened the scoring for the Panthers with a deep triple and Dayshanette Harris made a jumper just outside the lane to give Pitt the 5-3 lead. The Eagles regained an 8-7 lead midway through the quarter but the Panthers answered right back with 13 straight points as Channise Lewis connected on five straight including her first triple of her Pitt career and Liatu King netted back-to-back jumpers. The Eagles made a bucket right before the buzzer as Pitt claimed the 20-10 lead through 10 minutes.
The second quarter was sloppy for both squads as the Panthers opened the scoring with back-to-back triples by Harris and Lewis to take the 26-10 lead. Over the next six minutes, Coppin State scored the only points as they made a trio of free throws. Johnson closed out the scoring with a layup after a great feed from Lewis to give Pitt the 28-15 lead at the break.
