Jones, Thomas Win Gold in FIBA World Cup


SYDNEY — Maryland women’s basketball legends Brionna Jones and Alyssa Thomas and the rest of the U.S. Women’s National Team beat China, 83-61, Saturday in the Gold Medal game of the FIBA World Cup in Sydney. The U.S. won its fourth straight World Cup title and earned a bid to the 2024 Olympics in Paris.

Thomas was named the Best Defensive Player of the World Cup and was named to the All-World Cup Second Team. She led the tournament field with 19 steals in eight games and averaged 9.9 points, 7.0 rebounds and 4.3 assists. Jones averaged 10.4 points and 5.6 rebounds through the USA’s eight game title run. 

Jones and Thomas are on the Connecticut Sun and advance to the WNBA Finals. Their Finals run ended Sunday, Sept. 18, then the duo traveled to Australia to join Team USA. Earlier in the WNBA season, both of them were named to the WNBA All-Star Game.
