Training camp in the NBA is right around the corner and now is the time for teams to begin preparing for the grind of the upcoming season, but there is still some time to make a move here and there in order to get the team ready.
The Philadelphia 76ers are expected to be at the top of the Eastern Conference when the playoffs roll around in April and they also expect to seriously contend for a title. They have made some solid moves in the offseason, but there could still be a minor move made to help solidify the bench unit.
A mock trade from Bleacher Report has the Sixers sending Matisse Thybulle to the Detroit Pistons for some bench help.
The fake trade proposal
Philadelphia 76ers receive: Cory Joseph, a 2023 second-round pick, and a 2024 second-round pick (via MEM or WAS)
Detroit Pistons receive: Matisse Thybulle and Jaden Springer
B/R on why the Sixers do this deal
Itβs possible a minor move like this could be in the works, particularly if they donβt plan on paying Thybulle next summer and arenβt convinced the 19-year-old Springer can contribute to a title run.
Joseph, meanwhile, could help stabilize the backup point guard spot. The 31-year-old has long been a source of pesky defense and sound decision-making, and he quietly canned a career-best 41.4 percent of his triples last season (albeit on just 2.4 attempts per game).
Analyzing the deal from a Sixers standpoint
Thybulle is an elite defender as he does an incredible job of wreaking havoc for the opposition. He is able to get into the passing lanes and cause a lot of trouble for opponents and thatβs helpful, but his offensive development has come along at a slow pace that is really hindering his growth.
Joseph, meanwhile, is a reliable veteran with championship experience from his days with the San Antonio Spurs, and he can shoot the 3-ball. He shot it at 41.4% from deep for the Pistons in the 2021-22 season and he is a reliable ball-handler as he is able to get his team into the offensive flow. There is a lot to like about his game.
