Tre Donaldson to only play basketball

Tre Donaldson was one of Auburn’s most interesting signees in the 2022 recruiting class. The plan was for Donaldson to play both football and basketball at Auburn but that is no longer the case for his freshman season, according to Bruce Pearl.

Pearl spoke with reporters ahead of an alumni event in Atlanta Tuesday evening and told Nathan King of Auburn Undercover that Donaldson will play basketball only as a freshman. Bryan Harsin confirmed this to King later in the evening.

Donaldson is from Tallahassee, Florida, and was rated as a four-star safety and a three-star point guard by the 247Sports composite ranking.

Donaldson is one of three recruits to sign with Pearl for the 2022 recruiting class, five-star combo forward Yohan Traore, and four-star guard Chance Westry.

The loss of Donaldson is a blow to Auburn’s 2022 football class, he was the Tigers’ fourth highest-ranked signee. The good news is Auburn signed two other safety in the class, the No. 1 JUCO safety Marquise Gilbert and Caleb Wooden, who impressed in spring practice.
