F Derek Fountain transfers from Mississippi State

LSU’s full-scale roster rebuild in the wake of the Will Wade firing continued on Thursday afternoon, as coach Matt McMahon managed to land a commitment from a player who spent the last two seasons playing for a conference foe.

Junior forward Derek Fountain announced via his Instagram account that he will be transferring to LSU from Mississippi State. Fountain, a 6-foot-9, 220-pound player originally from Holly Springs, Mississippi, appeared in 25 games (starting three) for the Bulldogs this past season.

He averaged 1.8 points and 1.8 rebounds, a drop off from the 5.4 and 3.0 numbers, respectively, that he averaged the prior season as a true freshman. In 2020-21, he appeared in 19 games and started 10.

It makes sense that he would enter the portal after his role diminished this season, especially as MSU undergoes a coaching change as well. The Bulldogs fired Ben Howland and replaced him with New Mexico State’s Chris Jans after they missed the NCAA Tournament.

Fountain was a three-star recruit in the 2020 class, per 247Sports, and he also had an offer from Oklahoma in addition to several mid-major offers. With nearly every starting spot on this roster up for grabs, the upperclassman with SEC experience will look to be a leader on this new-look Tigers squad.
