No. 12 seed New Mexico State shocks No. 5 UConn in NCAA Tournament bracket-buster

New Mexico State coach Chris Jans said in a halftime interview he expected UConn to “come out and punch us in the mouth” in the second half.

Jans was right about the Huskies’ counter-punch. But it was the No. 12-seeded Aggies who kept delivering knockout blows to pull off a 70-63 first-round upset. A mid-major from the WAC, New Mexico State became the second bracket-busting Cinderella of the day on Thursday, advancing to the second round in the West Region.

Junior guard Teddy Allen put the team on his back and provided the offensive firepower for New Mexico State, scoring 23 of his 37 points in the first half. Allen went a perfect 13-for-13 from the free-throw line. UConn came clawing back in the second half after trailing 32-22 at halftime, but every time the Huskies got close, Allen was there to make a momentous play. Allen’s three-point play with 28 seconds left gave NMSU a 66-60 lead. And his three-pointer with 1:38 left made it 61-58 after Kentucky had tied the game the play…
