Four Kent State players disciplined before MAC tournament championship game for vulgar video

The Mid-American Conference disciplined four Kent State men’s basketball players hours before the team was to play the University of Akron in the MAC Tournament championship game Saturday night after a video with vulgar language and taunting surfaced on social media.

The conference suspended junior forward DJ Johnson indefinitely. Three other players, junior guard Malique Jacobs, freshman forward Cli’Ron Hornbeak and freshman guard Julius Rollins, will not play the first half of the final.

The most significant loss – at least for a half – comes with Jacobs missing time. In the MAC semifinal against Ohio on Friday night. Jacobs led the Golden Flashes with 19 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Johnson and Hornbeak did not play in Friday’s game, and Rollins is redshirting.

What are MAC officials…

“I’m disappointed this occurred,” MAC Commissioner Dr. Jon Steinbrecher said in a prepared statement. “This does not represent the values of Kent State or the Mid-American Conference. However, I commend the leadership of Kent State for being proactive in addressing this matter and collaborating with my office to bring this situation to resolution.”
