Each week during the 2024-25 season a Maryland student-athlete, who has shown excellence on and off the playing field, will be selected as the Solomon Eye Physicians & Surgeons Terp of the Week.
This week’s Terp of the Week is freshman Derik Queen of the men’s basketball team.
Queen averaged 25.0 points and 6.5 rebounds in leading Maryland to a split week at the Big Ten Tournament. Queen shot 56.7% from the field and knocked 14-of-16 (87.5) from the charity stripe. In an 88-65 win over Illinois, Queen had 19 points and 10 rebounds for Maryland’s first-ever double-double in a Big Ten Tournament Game. Queen followed that performance with a 30-point outing in the Big Ten Semifinals against Michigan, scoring 31 points in the semifinal match-up. Queen’s 31 points were the most points by a Maryland freshman in any game since 2015, the most points by a Maryland freshman in any Big Ten Tournament game, and the most points by any freshman in a Big Ten Tournament game since 2008. Queen was the first Terps to score 30+ points in a tournament game since Dez Wells in the 2013 ACC Quarterfinals.
Queen has had a phenomenal freshman campaign in College Park. He was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Year, while also being named All-Big Ten First Team by the coaches, All-Big Ten Second Team by the media, and named to the Big Ten All-Freshman Team. He became the first Terp to earn All-Big Ten First Team honors since Melo Trimble during the 2014-15 season. Queen leads the team averaging 16.3 points and tied for the team lead in rebounds at 9.0. Queen has 14 double-doubles on the year, and has had double digit rebounds in 16 games this season. Queen has scored 20 or more points in 11 games, the most for a single-season since Joe Smith had 15 in 1993-94.
Queen and the Terps return to action on Friday, March 21, as they open play in the NCAA Tournament against Grand Canyon at Climate Pledge Arena at 4:35 PM.
