Mid-Major Madness Women’s Player of the Week: Murray State’s Katelyn Young

Mid-Major Madness named Murray State’s Katelyn Young, as its Women’s Player of the Week for the week of March 3-9. The graduate forward averaged 29 points on 69% shooting and six rebounds to help lead the Racers to a pair of wins as they clinched a share of their first-ever Missouri Valley regular-season title.

She opened the week with 31 points on an efficient 13-of-16 shooting to go along with five rebounds and four assists to lead Murray State to an 88-60 victory at Evansville. In the regular-season finale, Oakwood, Ill., native tallied 27 points on 12-for-20 shooting, seven rebounds and five assists in a 109-70 win over Indiana State.

The Racers’ all-time leading scorer has posted double figures in all but two games this season and reached the 20-point plateau 20 times.

Young has 2,946 career points, which ranks 18th all-time on the Division-I scoring ledger as she sits just 54 points from the 3,000-point mark.

The Racers, who finished 16-4 in the MVC, are the top seed at the conference tournament that begins Thursday. The 16 conference wins were the most in program history.

Honorable Mention

Keeley Carter, Tennessee Tech

Carter led the Golden Eagles to the OVC championship and was named tournament MOP. She averaged 16.5 points over the two games they played in the tourney and was a perfect 16-for-16 from the free throw line. She knocked down all 13 attempts she had in the title game.

Diamond Johnson, Norfolk State

Johnson averaged 22 points, eight rebounds, 5.5 assists and 5.5 steals to help the Spartans complete an undefeated season in the MEAC with two wins. She posted 19 points, eight rebounds, six steals and five assists against North Carolina Central. The guard closed the regular season with 25 points, eight rebounds, six assists and five steals in the win over Howard.

Paige Meyer, South Dakota State

Meyer helped guide the Jackrabbits to their third straight Summit League tournament championship and garnered tournament MOP honors. She averaged 18.3 points, 5.3 assists and 3.3 rebounds over the three games. In the title game, the Albany, Minn., native accumulated 26 points (one off her season high) and narrowly missed her second double-double of the season with nine assists.

Ny’Ceara Pryor, Sacred Heart

Pryor averaged 24 points, nine rebounds, seven steals and four assists per game to lead the Pioneers to a pair of wins to close the regular season. The junior guard notched a triple-double with 24 points, 11 steals and 10…
