Projecting the 2024-25 MSU basketball rotation after roster finalized

Michigan State basketballโ€™s 2024-25 roster is finally complete following the addition of Longwood transfer center Szymon Zapala on Tuesday. After months of guessing and speculation, we finally know who Tom Izzo will be heading into battle with this fall, so itโ€™s time to start making sense of this group and how they will fit together.

There will be a lot of variance, and we could see multiple looks throughout the year as things change, but below, we take our best guess at the rotation that Tom Izzo will deploy for the bulk of the season.

We start with a player and position that is already in question. Jeremy Fears Jr. will be the starting point guard of this teamโ€ฆ at some point. Will it be game one following a season where he was out with a gunshot wound? That remains to be seen. There is a world where Izzo gives the nod to veteran Tre Holloman, who is more of a combo guard, but I think Fears will play the most starting point guard minutes by season end.

Jaden Akins is back. After two seasons of playing โ€˜footsyโ€™ with the NBA, Akins is back, this time as a veteran and back in his natural position of shooting guard. This is Akinsโ€™ team, and his chance to show he is NBA-ready. I think he will impress in this role, instead of trying to play undersized small forward.

Frankie Fidler has arrived. For the first time in years, Michigan State basketball will have a traditional small forward who can shoot it and score in dynamic ways, and fans have every right to be excited about what he can bring to this team.

For fans who still want Xavier Booker to be the starting centerโ€ฆ thatโ€™s not going to happen. Booker was sold on having a Jaren Jackson Jr. role on this team, and this is his time. Booker is one of the most tantalizing talents to come through East Lansing, and should put on a show this year with consistent minutes and a starting role.

Itโ€™s very possible that Tom Izzo uses a platoon approach this year, but as the best defender of the center group, I expect Carson Cooper to get the nod at starting center more often than not.
