Doug Gottlieb to be named next head coach at Green Bay

If I told you 365 days go that Sundance Wicks would get a shot at the Mountain West Conference in Wyoming because of a surprise move by Jeff Linder to Texas Tech, who would be on your short list for Green Bay?

Surely someone with coaching experience? Maybe an assistant on Wicks’ staff, or you tap into some old roots. Tom Crean is looking for work. Those options seem too obvious now. Green Bay has reportedly zeroed in on FOX Sports Radio personality and Field of 68 contributor Doug Gottlieb as its next head coach in a puzzling move that dropped Tuesday morning. Gottlieb was in the running in 2023 when Wicks was ultimately picked.

Sports Illustrated’s Kevin Sweeney appeared to be first with the official news, while friend of Mid-Major Madness CurryHicksSage was on the whispers Monday night.

Apparently, and this is from frenemy of Mid-Major Madness Jeff Goodman, Gottlieb will somehow continue he daily radio show on FOX. Why? Unclear. Some tweeters have speculated it gains exposure for Green Bay, but I highly doubt 15- to 18-year-old recruits are privy to Gottlieb’s antics on the medium reserved for your boomer grandpa.

Gottlieb of course played for Notre Dame in college where, in addition to dishing out assists, he made a habit of stealing off the court too. He was kicked off the team after stealing a roommates credit card. He later finished his college career at Oklahoma State.

Gottlieb is a native of Milwaukee.
