Social media reacts to UNC basketball recruits in McDonald’s Game

Most of the recent media coverage on basketball has focused on the Men’s and Women’s NCAA Tournaments.

Tonight, all the focus was on several of the country’s top high school basketball players, as ESPN broadcasted the McDonalds’ All-American Game.

Most of the attention might’ve been on Boogie Fland and Duke signee Cooper Flagg, but there were also a pair of future 5-star Tar Heels — Ian Jackson and Drake Powell — on the East roster.

Jackson was a starter for the East, while Powell played meaningful minutes off the bench. At one point midway through the opening half, I watched the two share court time together. It’ll only be a matter of time before we see this star-studded duo tearing up the court in Chapel Hill.

When I watched in the second quarter, the West appeared on the verge of running away. The East fought back, nabbing an 88-86 victory.

The final box score isn’t up yet, but SportingNews posted timely game updates throughout the McDAAG. Our fellow Tar Heel fans were also kind enough to share their thoughts on social media, including this key tweet that shows how the Jackson-Powell duo performed:

If you haven’t been following along with Jackson or Powell a ton, they’re both part of UNC’s 2024 recruiting class that also includes center James Brown. Jackson is listed as a 6’4″ shooting guard from Bronx, NY, while Powell is listed as a 6’6″ small forward.

Jackson and Powell can both do pretty much anything on the court. It’ll be tough for opponents guarding them next year in college ball.

For now, let’s take a look at social media and see what it thought of the two five stars’ performances:
