Recapping Chad Baker-Mazara’s epic first season at Auburn

Auburn basketball’s 2023-24 season concluded in the round of 64 with a loss to Yale, 78-76 in Spokane, Washington. It is now time to reflect on the season that was by reviewing the performances of Auburn’s key players.

Our series continues with Chad Baker-Mazara, who has just concluded his first season on the Plains after transferring from Northwest Florida State College in Niceville, Florida. Baker-Mazara quickly captivated Auburn fans by providing quality production off the bench and his exuberant court presence.

A great season was cut short in Auburn’s first round NCAA Tournament loss to Yale when he was ejected just four minutes into the game after being issued a flagrant 2 foul. Some, including Auburn assistant coach Steven Pearl, believe that his early departure played a role in Auburn’s early exit.

“We beat Yale by 20 points if Chad is in that game,” Pearl said in a recent interview with The Next Round. “I don’t want to dance around that. I’m not trying to, obviously, disrespect Yale, but we’re way better than they are and we should’ve beat them without him.”

Although his season ended in ugly fashion, his performance during the season was anything but. Here is a look at Baker-Mazara’s final numbers for the 2023-24 season.

Baker-Mazara was one of three Tigers to average double-figures this season, joining Johni Broome and Jaylin Williams. He scored at least 10 points in 20 games this season, recently dropping 10 in Auburn’s SEC Tournament championship win over Florida. His most memorable performance of the campaign was in Auburn’s win over Georgia on Feb. 25 when he dropped a career-high 25 points.

Baker-Mazara finished in the top five of rebounds this season by hauling in 3.7 per game, tying Dylan Cardwell for third-highest on the team. His strong suit was on the defensive side by pulling down 98 defensive rebounds. He hauled in a season-best seven rebounds twice this season, most recently doing so in a loss to Florida in February.

Auburn was one of the SEC’s best teams in assists, and Baker-Mazara did his part by creating 2.2 opportunities for his teammates to score per game. He finishes the season ranked No. 3 in assists behind point guards Tre Donaldson and Aden Holloway.
