Despite compiling a 13-2 March record featuring an 11-game winning streak, the path to the 2024 Western Conference postseason is becoming increasingly narrow for the Rockets (38-36).
Because of a return to peak form by the Golden State Warriors (40-34), who just won four in a row on the road, Houston now trails the West’s final play-in tournament berth by two games with eight to play, and they are also without the tiebreaker.
The Rockets do host Golden State on Thursday, which will provide a direct opportunity at home to make up one of those requisite three games. But with their overall margin of error quite slim, the Rockets probably can’t afford to lose any further ground before then.
That’s where Tuesday’s game at Minnesota (51-23) becomes crucial, and it won’t be easy on the road versus one of the West’s top teams.
