Arkansas guard Nick Smith Jr. declares for NBA Draft

Tuesday’s announcement wasn’t surprising for Arkansas basketball. That helped fans, at least.

Razorbacks freshman guard Nick Smith Jr. announced his decision to declare for the NBA Draft on Tuesday morning via Twitter.

Smith, from North Little Rock, averaged 12.5 points on 37.6% shooting in his first and only season at Arkansas. He played in just 17 games in large part because of a knee injury about which the program limited details.

At one point in the fall, before the season began, Smith was projected to go as high as No. 2 in the draft. Earlier this week, in the latest mock draft on The Athletic, Smith was projected to go 17th overall to Atlanta.

Smith’s injury hurt his stock, though his play when – apparently – healthy didn’t make it much better. He scored just 17 points in Arkansas’ three NCAA Tournament games and found himself on the bench at some critical junctures.

Still, Smith will be remembered, too, for making the game-winning basket against Auburn in the SEC Tournament that practically clinched the Hogs’ entry into the Big Dance.

Arkansas is still awaiting decisions from guard Anthony Black, a projected borderline lottery pick, Jordan Walsh, Ricky Council and Trevon Brazile. All five players have been listed as potential picks.
