On the heels of a long-awaited successful basketball season in Happy Valley, Penn State is about to undergo another coaching search for the right candidate to lead the program moving forward. Micah Shrewsberry, who guided the program for two seasons, reportedly was finalizing a lengthy contract with Notre Dame after days and weeks of speculation, finally allowing everyone to move on for better or worse.
As you might imagine, the realization that Shrewsberry was about to leave Happy Valley was a bit of a hot-button topic of conversation on social media. And, of course, not all of the reactions were level-headed. But there were some rational opinions on the situation if you looked closely enough.
Here are some of the reactions to the Shrewsberry news that were shared on Twitter as the news was breaking and spreading.
Micah Shrewsberry’s deal with Notre Dame is 7 years and worth well more than $4 million per year, source told @Stadium. https://t.co/0MR1piIOxk

It was never believed that Penn State was going to lose Micah Shrewsberry over money, so the terms of the contract may not be the tipping point. That said, a seven-year contract at $4 million per year isn’t half-bad for a third-year head coach.
Not surprised at the news of Micah Shrewsberry going to Notre Dame. Had lately believed it was possible Irish would opt for Greg McDermott. But ND made better choice and PSU could not fight tug of his home state Indiana where he can be around folks who love basketball as he does.

Micah Shrewsberry earned his chops as a coach in the basketball-loving state of Indiana as an assistant at Butler and Purdue. A chance to return to the state to coach one of the top programs in the state was always going to be a tough battle for Penn State to counter, and it doesn’t hurt that Notre Dame has a richer basketball history overall compared to Penn State, and the NIL support in South Bend will no doubt exceed what Shrewsberry ever would have been able to pull off at Penn State.
It’s hard to deny Shrewsberry’s acumen but I don’t think Penn State was going to turn around and do this all over again without some degree of rebuild. Glass half full for Penn State is that a coaching change is happening in offseason of major roster turnover to begin with.
