UNC Basketball contacts SEC point guard transfer

In their latest search in the transfer portal for a guard, UNC basketball has reached out to Florida’s, Kowacie Reeves.

As reported by Joe Tipton of On3Sports this morning, the UNC Basketball program has reached out to another guard in the transfer portal.

Kowacie Reeves is the first power five transfer that North Carolina has reportedly reached out to. Reeves spent his first two seasons at Florida and will be a rising junior in 2023-2024 with two years of eligibility remaining.

Kowacie is a 6’6″ guard from Macon, GA. He was a 4-star recruit by 247 Sports coming out of high school in the class of 2021, ranked 42nd overall in his class, and the 10th overall shooting guard.

During his time with the Gators, Reeves averaged 17.5 minutes per game. Unlike the other guards the Tar Heels have reached out to at this point, Nick Timberlake and Paxson Wojick, Kowacie doesn’t have eye-popping numbers on the stat sheet. He averaged 7.1 points per game during his two years at Florida, while playing in 60 games for the Gators. Most of his time came off the bench, he started 17 games in two years.

Reeves becomes the third guard in the transfer portal to hear from UNC in less than a week. With the departures of Dontrez Styles and Tyler Nickel, it is apparent that head coach Hubert Davis is adamant about adding depth at the guard position.

While Reeves brings the experience of playing at the power-five level in the SEC, he will still be a player that will need to develop in Chapel Hill. One thing we’ve heard Coach Davis say often this year is the Tar Heels have to make shots and open ones.

In Reeves’ first two seasons, he averaged 37.7% from the field and 29.2% from 3. He declined from his freshman to sophomore season in shooting from beyond the arc. He was a 33.3% three-point shooter his freshman season, taking 96 threes and making 32 of them.

The big positive for Reeves is he has two years of eligibility remaining, meaning he would have that time to develop and improve upon those stats.  Some fans would rather see a power-five transfer over a mid-major one. What do you think? Could Kowacie Reeves help the 2023-24 Tar…
