Tar Heels dance continues with 61-59 win over St. John’s

The No. 6 North Carolina women’s basketball team’s road to an NCAA title continues as they beat No.11 St. John’s 61-59.

The Tar Heels defeated the St. John’s Saturday afternoon, with Courtney Banghart’s fully healthy UNC team at her disposal. The biggest key to victory was North Carolina’s ability to defend the paint no matter who came charging in.

In the second quarter, the defensive pressure was at its highest, with UNC allowing only five offensive points.

As the game continued, the score got closer, with momentum switching back and forth. Finally, with the game tied at 58 a piece, Deja Kelly did what she does best with a drive to a bucket resulting in a finish plus one to give UNC a three-point lead.

St. John’s was rewarded on the following position a questionable foul on a three-point shot to tie the game when you thought it was over. However, the ball does not lie as one of three attempts was made, giving UNC the 61-59 win.

Kelly finished with 18 points and four rebounds adding another impressive performance to her resume.

North Carolina will now take on No. 3 Ohio State, who dominated their first game of the tournament with an 80-66 win over James Madison. It will be the first time the Tar Heels play the Buckeyes this year, but they had similar success over James Madison with a 76-65 win back in November.
